ResponsibilitiesThe Tax Analyst assists with indirect tax (sales/use, excise, liquor), property tax, unclaimed property and federal and state income tax compliance to ensure tax returns are completed on time and accurately to avoid any unnecessary penalties and interest. This position brings value to Spirit by assisting Senior Tax Analyst with tax saving strategies through researching, interpreting, and implementing tax laws. Supports the Finance and Accounting teams by conducting monthly, quarterly and annually tax reports. Assists Senior Tax Analyst with the preparation of monthly, quarterly and yearly tax filings and federal/state tax audits.

  • Prepare monthly workpapers and assist in the filing of sales/use taxes and liquor taxes – inclusive of review of monthly G/L accounts.
  • Federal Excise Tax – Passenger, prepare bi-monthly payments based on the revenue summary. Prepare quarterly excise tax return. Research excise issues on new products/services or changes to the existing products/services.
  • Federal Excise Tax – Fuel, prepare bimonthly fuel tax payments based on the fuel summary. Prepare fuel tax workpapers for the quarterly excise tax return.
  • State Fuel Tax, prepare monthly fuel tax returns and fuel tax refund for multiple states.
  • Property Tax (PPT) – create timely property tax payment request. Respond promptly to inquiries from property tax consultant and state government on PPT payment issues. Gather required data to assist consultant with annual filings.
  • Federal and State Income and Franchise Tax – assist in preparation of annual federal and state income and franchise tax returns and supporting work papers. Assist in preparation of quarterly estimated payments based on the forecast. Monitor federal and state legislation changes which will impact company’s filings. Research and update state apportionment calculation based on the new legislation. Communicate with federal and state authorities to resolve tax notices received. Assist Sr. Tax Analyst during the federal/state audit.
  • May perform other responsibilities as assigned. Responsibilities and duties may change when circumstances dictate (e.g., emergencies change in workload, rush jobs, or technical developments).

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (Tax, Accounting, or Finance).
  • 1-3 years of Tax related experience.
  • Understanding of relevant computer programs (Microsoft 365 and SAP).
  • Job Knowledge – possesses a thorough understanding of accounting / U.S. GAAP principles as well as a basic understanding of corporate income tax. Must have a desire to learn the intricacies of corporate taxation and apply such knowledge acquired to assigned responsibilities.
  • Communication Skills – expresses written ideas clearly, ensuring overall organization, structure, grammar, language and terminology is adjusted to the characteristics and needs of the audience. Orally expresses ideas effectively in individual and group situations.
